Jaw Pain (TMJ)

TMJ disorders relate to a group of disorders in which the connecting point between the jaw and the skull becomes painful and swollen. The cause of this can vary widely, and in some instances, no known cause is ever discovered.

The majority of patients presenting with TMJ pain can, in most cases, be effectively managed without invasive medical intervention. 75% of patients will improve over 3-6 months with simple conservative management like chiropractic care.

Symptoms of TMJ

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders are a group of conditions creating pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement.

Temporomandibular dysfunction may be present as one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the jaw joint or in the muscles of mastication;
  • Audible popping, clicking, or crepitus accompanying jaw movement
  • Aberrant movement upon opening or closing the jaw joint.

In some cases, they may also experience some dizziness. Since other ailments can cause similar problems, it’s important to be seen and diagnosed by a professional.

How Chiropractic Treatment Can Help TMJ

Chiropractic care for jaw pain will usually include manipulation to neck, upper back and jaw, some soft tissue technique to the neck and jaw muscles and some gentle stretches to do at home.

Many people who have TMJ need ongoing care in order to keep the pain and other side effects away. But with regular treatment many sufferers of this condition find ongoing relief from this particular condition.
